“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Matthew 6:25 (NIV)
This verse of Scripture that talks about not to worry begins with a “therefore”
The therefore or the reason it’s there for is found in the verse before which is verse 24. In other words the cause of verse 25 is in verse 24.
Matthew 6:24 (NIV) “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
The reason of the worry in verse 25 is the serving or worship of money in verse 24.
The root cause of worry is when money or material things become our god that we serve or worship. Of course no one goes around praising and worshipping money or material things saying “oh you are worthy almighty money, oh you’re glorious most high material things” Worship or serving is in our attitude reflected in our thinking and conduct. We were made for God. He’s our source of everything good.
Whenever anyone or anything else takes the place of God in our heart and mind it becomes our source and security. The result will be uncertainty and thus worry because no one, nothing else apart from God can guarantee our wellbeing and satisfaction. The reason we worry is because we totally put out whole trust not in God but material things or money. We lean our entire person and being on the things we possess, our education, abilities, wealth experiences, skills, knowledge and power.
But because all these cannot successfully deliver we are left hanging in uncertainty where the inevitable is anxiety and stress.
There is nothing wrong with your natural human ability, knowledge, wisdom, possessing material wealth, education, training, skills, money and power. God actually gave us all these things to serve us and to be enjoyed. Only we shouldn’t look to them as our everything for life. We should always look to God as our all in all.
Free yourself from worry by shifting your focus from money and material things and settling it on God and His unfailing love for you as the source and security of your life.
