“Be generous. Give to the poor. Get yourselves a bank that can’t go bankrupt, a bank in heaven far from bank robbers, safe from embezzlers, a bank you can bank on. It’s obvious, isn’t it? The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being. Luke 12:33-34 (MSG)
This is God’s GPS (Global Positioning System) that effortlessly accurately locates every one of us and our treasure all at the same time!
We are always found where our treasure is and our treasure is always found where we are at. The most important things in our lives, the things that matter most in our lives that’s where our heart is at home.
We spend our time, strength and resources on people and things that are of greatest worth and most valuable to us.
In ministry many people rant and brag about treasuring and serving God but on closer scrutiny they actually treasure and serve themselves, their fame and wealth. For instance very many ministers in the pursuit of ‘growing’ their ministries are more concerned and focused on putting more time, efforts, and money in the latest state of the art, very expensive, church buildings, programs, curtains, lights, carpets, sound and media equipment etc., while the people they call brothers and sisters who faithfully, loyally, tirelessly support the ministry with all their heart, time, and strength are struggling to get what to eat and other very simple basic necessities of life which even cost very little.
God treasures people more than buildings, equipment or man-made programs.
Hear what Jesus has to say about buildings –
As Jesus was leaving the temple grounds, His disciples pointed out to Him the various temple buildings. But He responded, “Do you see all these buildings? I tell you the truth, they will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!” Matthew 24:1-2 (NLT)
Then hear what He says about people that is you and I –
1 Peter 2:5 (NLT) And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God.
The Lord treasures people and their welfare more than anything else. Nothing wrong with buildings, equipment and programs but God’s heart is in people. Someone will argue that those things are required and thus acquired for the sake of people but truth is if their acquisition stands against and overshadows the wellbeing of people especially those who are closest to us moreover standing with and supporting us in ministry then as far as God is concerned we are working contrary to the very purpose we think we’re aiming at. This cuts across all spheres of life in all the things we do, we should treat people well. You say God is my treasure. If that’s really true then people and their wellbeing would be your treasure because God treasures people and that’s where His heart is.
