Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me. Psalms 51:10 (AMPC)
Clean or right living is a result of a clean or right heart. So is unclean or wicked living a result of an unclean or evil heart.
But we can’t in and of our own selves make our hearts clean or right regardless of good intentions, no matter how we strive to change. Only God can change hearts.
What was David’s earnest request under the old covenant is now our reality under the New Covenant. David came to understand that he needed a clean heart in order to walk in and do that which is clean or right, and pleasing to God. So he prayed to God for a heart recreation.
Once upon a time we all had an old, unclean, deceitful, evil, sick heart.
But thanks to God in Christ Jesus we who have believed now have a clean heart.
A clean heart is one that’s right with God. It’s a heart that’s in agreement with God. It’s a heart that believes right. Believing right is believing what God has done, what God says in Jesus Christ.
God gives us clean hearts through the work He did in raising Jesus from the dead.
Believing that God raised Jesus from the dead is how our hearts are made clean.
Romans 10:9-10 (NLT) 9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.
Just as Jesus rose to New Life in God, all of us who believe in Him who rose from the dead have new clean hearts and live and walk in newness of life.
