I cried out to You, O LORD: I said, “You [are] my refuge, My portion in the land of the living. Psalm 142:5 (NKJV)
The greatest possession in life is having a personal intimate relationship with the Lord Himself. This is what the Lord being our portion means. The Lord Jesus told Martha that her sister Mary who sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to Him had chosen a good part that would never be taken away from her – Luke 10:38-42. The Lord Himself is the good part or portion that will never be taken away from us. Our relationship with the Lord can never be taken away, it can never be broken, it will never end, it will never wear off like what happens to human relationships. The life, peace, joy, rest and assurance we have in the Lord will never be taken away, they’re everlasting. The good works we do in the Lord – doing His will, serving Him, benefit us here now and are going to follow us into eternity with everlasting rewards- Matthew 19:27-29. Earthly possessions can be taken away. Actually, everything earthly remains here when we breathe our last. The strongest bond is that of marriage but when one of them dies it’s dissolved. The deepest connection is that of the spirit and body but at passing on they separate. Only our union with the Lord is never broken because at the moment of departing this life we are joined with Him and we continue so on the other side. What we are and have in the Lord, what we do in and for the Lord, are the treasures we lay up in heaven and there no thief steals, no bug eats and no rust corrupts. This is the good part that will not be taken away from us. The true lasting portion we have is the Lord Himself.
