In the same way, you wives must accept the authority of your husbands. Then, even if some refuse to obey the Good News, your godly lives will speak to them without any words. They will be won over by observing your pure and reverent lives. Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. 1 Peter 3:1-4 (NLT)
As Christians we are here on earth to bear witness to Christ. We have been born of God and our purpose is to live and demonstrate to the world this God kind of life that we have in Christ.
The church father St Augustine of Hippo once said “preach the Gospel and where necessary use words” He was putting another way what Paul says that believers are a written epistle or letter known and read by all. 2 Corinthians 3:2, 3.
The Message Bible says in the last part of verse 2 “Your very lives are a letter that anyone can read by just looking at you”
So also, Peter in talking to wives about proclaiming the Gospel to their husbands says that some who may refuse the spoken witness, the silent witness will win them over – even if some refuse to obey the Good News, your godly lives will speak to them without any words. They will be won over by observing your pure and reverent lives. 1Peter 3:1, 2.
The rest of us can also learn from this wisdom. Our lives, conduct, behavior, attitude are the foremost in witnessing Christ to others. The saying that your actions are too loud I can’t hear what you’re saying rightly pins the point of this matter. As we live this Christian life day and night before those who haven’t believed and more so those who fiercely oppose, we are actually preaching to them more sincerely, convincingly and effectively. They eventually get won over to Christ. The goodness of God exhibited in our conduct and lifestyle leads them to repentance.
So, if you’ve been nagging, begging, sweet talking, or hell threatening relatives, schoolmates, workmates, or strangers trying to win them to Christ with little to no results it’s time you switched to and started engaging God’s own unbeatable, failsafe weapon – you, your lifestyle, your conduct. Be and stay nice to the nasty, caring to the cruel, believe the best of those who are acting bad, be understanding to the annoying ones. Share the blessings of God in your life with others. Encourage more than you correct, comfort more than you criticize. Your convictions lived is a silent Witness to people louder than shouting at them.
