Nevertheless I have [this] against you, that you have left your first love. Revelation 2:4 (NKJV)
The first love is first of all Him who first loved us. We love because He first loved us.
Then also the first love is His love that we got to know and experienced at first. What was or what is this love? Unconditional love!
He loved us while we were still sinners, while we were still enemies, while we were still dead in our trespasses. This is the first love we saw in Him, the love that drew us to Him, the love then that drove us to live for Him, serve Him. We lived, worked, prayed, forgave, gave, treated others driven by this love alone – His passionate love for us. But along the way the deceiver came and told us that in order for God to Love us we must do something to earn His love.
So we left that first unconditional love now we live, walk pray, give, serve, sacrifice in order to be loved and accepted and the result of this is dead works that are done out of a sense of unworthiness, insecurity, fear, indebtedness and pride.
Returning to the first love is a change of mind; from struggling hard to be loved by God to knowing and resting in His unconditional Love
