Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad. Proverbs 12:25 (NKJV)
One of the reasons why the Word of God is very effective at dealing with any issue is because it goes to the very root of the matter.
The root of depression and practically all the problems we face in life can be traced right to the heart. Not the physical blood pumping heart but the part of our inner being made up of our mind, emotions, and will.
The flow of life starts right from our hearts, whether happiness or sadness, confidence or fear, hope or despair, diligence or slothfulness, victory or defeat it’s all from the heart. Therefore, concerning any life matter we should begin from the heart.
While there are a number of ways for dealing with or fighting depression even as there are several reasons why people get into depression, the most effective way to defeat depression is found in God’s Word. That’s where we should look for a sure lasting remedy. The Word of God diagnoses depression as the result of anxiety in the heart as our starting scripture has said.
Not only does the Word give a diagnosis but also prescribes the treatment and cure.
Getting rid of anxiety from the heart is the treatment and cure for depression.
When we face distressing moments or even life-threatening situations and see ourselves helpless in dealing with them it causes anxiety.
God knows this so He told us in His Word, “do not be anxious about anything” Philippians 4:6
Someone might reason that it’s only human and therefore normal to be anxious, you just can’t help it. But we know God can’t be unjust and inconsiderate to tell us, actually command us to do something we can’t do. Whatever He tells us to do He gives us His ability to do.
Therefore, it’s possible not to be anxious in anything – any problem or difficulty because God’s Word says so and it’s the truth.
How can we not be anxious, how can we be anxious free?
By giving to God through prayer all that is causing or keeping us in an uneasy state of mind.
Philippians 4:6-7(AMPC) Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
When we hand over to God in prayer what we can’t carry or deal with in our own strength we experience His peace in our hearts.
This peace of God is not just a mere psychological make believe or make feel but a true heart assurance knowing that God is actually taking care of whatever is troubling us.
The last part of our theme scripture says “But a good word makes it glad”. Proverbs 12:25.
A good word makes an anxious heart glad and this dissolves anxiety and dispels depression. This refers to the Word of God or any word that’s in agreement with what God says. Hearing the Word of God brings gladness to the heart and this casts out depression. Whether it’s you or another person you are helping to fight depression, get saturated with what God says to you and about you. He loves you unconditionally, He cares about you affectionately, He watches over you protectively.
