When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. James 1:13-15 (NIV)
In the Garden of Eden the serpent only got Eve to look at the forbidden fruit, the look led to desire, which gave birth to sin, which led to death. Genesis 3:6 (NIV) When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
What are you looking at? What is your heart and mind focused on? Long before you got to what you’re doing now you first looked, then desire was birthed and then that action. This is why Jesus said that a lustful look at someone is already an act of adultery with that person in your heart. Matthew 5:28. If you’re looking at what’s ungodly and wicked that’s the desire that will be produced, you will be effortlessly drawn to these things and it will lead to sin and eventually to death which includes guilt, condemnation, frustration, abuse, oppression, and destruction.
But thanks to God we can look to Jesus – See Hebrews 12:2 the desire of the nations.. Haggai 2:7 and righteous and holy desires are birthed leading to life eternal.
