A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1 (NIV)
In relationships, yielding triumphs over resistance, and gentleness is more powerful than roughness. Rehoboam was king Solomon’s son who became king after him – 2 Chronicles 10. The people of Israel implored Rehoboam saying “Lighten the harsh labor demands and heavy taxes that your father imposed on us. Then we will be your loyal subjects.” – 2 Chronicles 10:4 (NLT). Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon and they advised him to be kind to the people, treat them well and they would be loyal to him forever. But Rehoboam rejected that advice and instead asked and listened to the young men who grew up with him, who advised him to be tougher and harsher on the people more than his father was. The result was Israel rebelled against Rehoboam. To men gentleness and kindness is weakness especially in the face of offense but according to the wisdom of God it’s strength and triumph. God didn’t react with anger, harshness and retribution to the world’s sin, He responded with love, kindness and gentleness, giving us forgiveness and Salvation through Jesus Christ. Be gentle, understanding, patient, be kind, forgive. That’s the way to stop escalation, resolve conflicts, bring healing and winning over people.
