Leave Self-pity behind

February 17, 2023 John Nsamba Comments off Devotions

When he got there, he crawled into a cave and went to sleep. Then the word of GOD came to him: “So Elijah, what are you doing here?” “I’ve been working my heart out for the GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies,” said Elijah. “The people of Israel have abandoned your covenant, destroyed the places of worship, and murdered your prophets. I’m the only one left, and now they’re trying to kill me.” 1 Kings 19:9-10(NKJV)

The prophet Elijah felt self-pity too and he expressed it to God. He thought he was the only one suffering as he was and worse still everyone else was trying to kill him. But God would have none of it, because the all-knowing and all-seeing one had asked Elijah what he was doing there. Self-pity doesn’t help at all neither does it get God’s attention or approval. It’s self-deception and self-torment like the sulkiness of a teenager or the tantrum of a toddler.

Actually God told Elijah to go back the way he came. See-1 Kings 19:15. This meant that whatever Elijah had run away from, he had the power to confront and deal with. As far as God is concerned there’s no reason for us to wallow in self-pity no matter what has happened to us. We are more than conquerors in all situations through Christ.

Also God had seven thousand other people who were for Him like Elijah. See-1 Kings 19:18.

You may think you’re the only one in the situation you’re in but there are many others just like you, if not even in a tighter spot.

Elijah left the self-pity behind, went back to business with God. He helped others find God’s purpose for their lives and through them God’s calling for Israel continued even after Elijah’s departure to heaven. Therefore climb out of that pity party pit you crawled into. Stop singing about what they did to you, what you don’t have and what you can’t do. Like He told Elijah, the Lord is telling you to go back the way you came, In other words stand up to that challenge and confront it boldly in Jesus’ Name. You’re not a victim but a victor. Hallelujah!
