And it will nevermore be necessary for each one to teach his neighbor and his fellow citizen or each one his brother, saying, Know (perceive, have knowledge of, and get acquainted by experience with) the Lord, for all will know Me, from the smallest to the greatest of them. Hebrews 8:11(AMPC)
In the Old Testament before Jesus Christ came God spoke to men and women most especially the people of Israel in many various ways. Hebrews 1:1. He spoke to them primarily and majorly through prophets. If someone wanted to hear from God in ancient Israel they’d go to a prophet. 1 Samuel 9:9 (AMPC) (Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, Come, let us go to the seer, for he that is now called a prophet was formerly called a seer.)
But that was the old covenant.
We are now under The New Covenant, a better covenant established on better promises. Hebrews 8:6. Therefore it’s totally amiss and disastrous for a New Covenant believer to try to relate with God like they did in the old covenant doing things they did there. Jesus told us that new wine is not put into old wine skins, because the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” See- Matthew 9:17 (NKJV)
Under the old covenant God wrote the ten commandments on cold lifeless stone tablets.
In the New Covenant God has written His laws in our regenerated living hearts, renewed minds, innermost thoughts and understanding.
Hebrews 8:10 (AMPC) For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will imprint My laws upon their minds, even upon their innermost thoughts and understanding, and engrave them upon their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
The law or laws that God has written in our hearts and minds are not the ten commandments but rather His Living Holy Spirit whom He has sent into us.
The Holy Spirit dwells in every believer therefore every believer can hear God for themselves and follow Him.
1 Corinthians 3:16 (NKJV) Do you not know that you are the temple of God and [that] the Spirit of God dwells in you?
God speaks to each one of us His children through His Holy Spirit who lives forever in our hearts. Romans 8:14 (NKJV) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
The Holy Spirit speaks to our heart or spirit therefore it’s from there that we hear God. Romans 8:16 (NKJV) The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.
Hear and follow God for yourself by paying attention to and acting on what’s in your heart because God speaks, instructs, and leads all of us His children by His Spirit in our hearts.
