Where there is no vision [no redemptive revelation of God], the people perish; but he who keeps the law [of God, which includes that of man]–blessed (happy, fortunate, and enviable) is he. Proverbs 29:18 (AMPC)
It’s true that what you see is what you get. Here is a scriptural illustration of this truth.
After Lot had gone, the Lord said to Abram, “Look as far as you can see in every direction—north and south, east and west. I am giving all this land, as far as you can see, to you and your descendants as a permanent possession. Genesis 13:14-15 (NLT)
God tells Abram later called Abraham the father of faith that it’s what he could see that he could possess. This is the basic meaning of vision – ability to see. What do you see? Not just physically, not just mere casual superficial seeing.
Vision is what you inwardly see of yourself even before it’s visible on the outside. The life, the dream, the pursuits that bring you fulfillment begin as a vision in your heart and mind.
Vision is the blueprint of life. One may go ahead and construct a house without a blueprint or plan but it will exert a lot of physical and mental strain, the house will not turn out right and most likely not last long. It’s the same thing with going through life without a vision. Every goal to be reached in life starts with a vision. Whether living healthy; finishing one’s education; building a house, family, ministry or business; realizing that dream job or career; living debt free; it all begins as a vision plan laid out in our mind and heart.
A vision is divine guidance. Proverbs 29:18 (NLT) When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild. But whoever obeys the law is joyful.
God guides us in life regarding what to do by giving as a vision. He gives us the ability to see the unseen so we can do the impossible.
He took childless Abraham outside, told him to look up at the stars, and see if he could count them. Then He told him that so shall his descendants be. Abraham believed. Genesis 15:5, 6 (NKJV)
In other words Abraham got the vision or blueprint of multitudes of people coming from him impressed on his mind and heart. Later that vision in his mind and heart was realized in Isaac, Jacob, the nation of Israel and of course all believers in Christ who is the seed of Abraham.
The best way and place to get a vision is in God’s Word. In God’s Word we see what He is doing. Proverbs 29:18 (MSG) If people can’t see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves; But when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed.
When you see what God’s doing you’re right in the center of the greatest vision there could be. God’s grandest vision for all of us is abundant life through seeing or looking to or trusting in His Son Jesus Christ. Get started there!
