Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me [ceased from fretting]. Psalm 131:2 (AMPC)
Weaning or taking a child off breastfeeding is a difficult task and all sorts of weird methods have been used by mothers to do it. Some smear bitter and even odd smelling stuff on the breasts to discourage the child. It’s a very difficult time for the child getting off the breast that has been their only source of nourishment. It’s stepping out of a comfort zone, the only world of satisfaction the baby knows. But the baby is quieted and calmed as better suited food is introduced. In the same way in our spiritual growth and journey Father God is constantly weaning us off certain things which at one time were suitable but now we have to let go and move to something better. It can be a very difficult time for us – certain ways and practices may no longer be working not because they are wrong but because it’s time to grow up. Certain people, places, relationships, ways of doing things, even praying, ministering, may no longer be working. In this case it’s not getting into a lot of activity of more spiritual warfare or prayer and fasting but calming and quieting our souls listening to the Lord to find out and get into the new and better thing the Lord has for us.
