Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts, as [happened] in the rebellion [of Israel] and their provocation and embitterment [of Me] in the day of testing in the wilderness. Hebrews 3:7-8 (AMPC)
When God freed Israel out of Egypt and led them through the wilderness His desire for them was a life of rest and wellbeing in the promised land where He was taking them. But they never experienced what God had prepared for them and the reason was simply because they never listened to His voice.
This is not mere superficial hearing but rather paying attention to and acting on what you have heard. We walk, live and are established in God’s purposes for our lives by hearing His voice and obeying it.
In Psalms 23:1 the Lord is our Shepherd, we do not lack. As our Shepherd the Lord supplies all our needs. He guides us, watches over us, and provides for us in His love. He accomplishes all this as He leads us.
Like a shepherd leads his sheep to safety and supply the Lord is always leading us in paths of peace and plenty. He does this by speaking. God is always ever speaking to us.
What’s required of us is to listen, pay close attention and follow or act positively.
Jesus said “my sheep hear my voice… and they follow me – John 10:27.
To walk and live with God is a result of hearing His voice and following the instructions. To walk and live in every good thing God has for us is a result of hearing and obeying Him.
The first place we hear God is His Written Word. God has spoken and is still speaking to us in His written Word or Scriptures or the Bible. Secondly, we hear God’s voice in our hearts or spirits.
Hebrews 8:10(MSG) This new plan I’m making with Israel isn’t going to be written on paper, isn’t going to be chiseled in stone; This time I’m writing out the plan in them, carving it on the lining of their hearts. I’ll be their God, they’ll be my people.
God carves His plan on our hearts. When we sense that inward peace or lack of it in our hearts concerning a certain situation especially when we have to make a decision its God’s voice guiding us to do the right thing- Colossians 3:15.
