The purpose of the sayings of the wise or Proverbs is so we may gain wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
The first part of Proverbs 1:4 (NLT) says that the purpose of Proverbs is to give insight to the simple.
The Hebrew word translated ‘simple’ implies a person who is easily deceived, led astray, and cheated, one with a tendency towards what’s wrong. Without the wisdom, instruction, and understanding that comes from what God says to us in His Word, we live and walk in ‘simplicity’ or as fools, without discernment and easily exploited.
There are 31 chapters of the book of Proverbs. That’s a chapter of wisdom, instruction, and understanding a day for a whole month. Just like a proverb has meaning hidden in it, God’s Word has wisdom, instruction, and understanding hidden in it. When you take time to get into the Word and give time to the Word to get into you, then you can find and walk in God’s own wisdom and understanding.
