He who becomes security for an outsider shall smart for it, but he who hates suretyship is secure [from its penalties]. Proverbs 11:15 (AMPC)
“Think twice” very often means don’t do what you thought or felt at first. If you do it, then get ready to deal with the consequences. Because the first thought or feeling is most of the time born of impulse and not based on wise counsel. You can’t and shouldn’t offer yourself as guarantor of the integrity and dependability of someone you don’t know.Trust is built on knowledge and acquaintance.Putting up security for a stranger’s debt is taking on that debt as yours right up front. It is committing yourself to paying that debt. Therefore think twice – don’t do it!
