A good man leaves an inheritance [of moral stability and goodness] to his children’s children, and the wealth of the sinner [finds its way eventually] into the hands of the righteous, for whom it was laid up. Proverbs 13:22 (AMPC)
True lasting inheritance is more than material possessions. It’s the substance from which the things that are required for life come from. This explains why in one place it says Abraham gave all he had to Isaac and in the next verse it says Abraham gave gifts to the other children he had by his concubines – Genesis 25:5-6. While the other children got material things Isaac got the substance or power that produces and sustains all wealth, prosperity and well being which is a relationship with God. Isaac passed this same ability on to Jacob who also passed it on to his children the twelve sons who make up the nation of Israel. While it’s great leaving material inheritance to your children the greatest is bequeathing to your children and children’s children the God inheritance – a life of union and communion with God. Like Paul in his last farewell tells the Ephesians “So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.” Acts 20:32(NKJV)
