You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all [who are] in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:13-16(AMPC)
As believers we are called salt and light of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
The city of Jericho was situated in pleasant surroundings, it was in a prime location, a fine city, but the water was bad, polluted, causing miscarriages, and the land was barren, unproductive, nothing would grow. They told all this to Elisha the prophet who told them to bring him a new bowl and salt in it. He went to the source of the water, poured the salt there and declared “The Lord says ‘ I have healed, purified this water, never shall there be any poisoning, bareness, miscarriages, bereavement, or death, and it was done. 2Kings 2:19-22.
Salt signifies healing, purification, preservation. This is what believers are in the world that’s polluted, barren, and unproductive. We carry the healing, purifying and preserving power of Christ’s love and life in us.
Through the Gospel (living it and proclaiming it) we bring productivity wherever we are – at home, among family, friends, at the work place.
Secondly, we are the light of the world. This light we are is the life of Christ in us. It comes out and so shines so everyone can see it as good works. The works of Faith. What we believe we act out. We believe God loves us; therefore, we love Him back by loving people He created in His own image. We do good to others, even as our heavenly Father is and does good to us. We are kind to, patient with, and forgive others because this is what’s on the inside of us from God. We salt and light the world!
