If it had not been the Lord Who was on our side–now may Israel say– Psalms 124:1(AMPC)
In this Psalm David acknowledges the Lord as his safety, strength, security, and stay. He ascribes Israel’s help as coming not from their military might, numbers, or strategies but in the Name of the Lord.
Psalms 124:2, 3, 6, 7. If it had not been the Lord Who was on our side when men rose up against us. Then they would have quickly swallowed us up alive when their wrath was kindled against us; Blessed be the Lord, Who has not given us as prey to their teeth! We are like a bird escaped from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped!
In other words David is saying that it was because the Lord was on their side that when the enemy came against them he couldn’t overcome them, harm them, or destroy them. Whatever the enemy had intended, planned and plotted to carry out against them was foiled by the Lord.
All of us can recount a number of incidences in our lives where we experienced the same testimony – if it hadn’t been the Lord.
If it hadn’t been the Lord that child wouldn’t have been born alive or healthy. If it hadn’t been the Lord that marriage wouldn’t have survived, if it hadn’t been the Lord that business, company would have failed, if it hadn’t been the Lord….
