A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 1 Timothy 3:2-3 (NKJV)
In the qualities required above in one who aspires to lead in the Church and even in life, the greatest percentage is about treating others right. We get ahead by helping others get ahead.
Let’s see these qualities unveiled from our theme Scripture:
The husband of one wife; 1 Timothy 3:2
What’s unveiled here is a practical application of the second greatest commandment – to love your neighbor as yourself. One’s wife or husband is their closest neighbor. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
Of good behavior; 1Timothy 3:2. Paul says they behaved godly and right towards the believers 1Thessalonians 2:10.
Hospitable; 1Timothy 3:2.
This is showing concern for the well-being of others. Not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous.1 Timothy 3:3.All these are about putting others before you, treating them the way you would want to be treated.
