The Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night did not depart from before the people. Exodus 13:21-22 (AMPC)
We have been called to a led life. The only successful and fulfilled life is the God kind of life and the only one who can live it is God Himself. But thank God, He has invited us to share in His life. We get to participate in this life as we let Him lead us, put another way as we follow Him.
The Lord led Israel in the wilderness by a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night.
It’s extremely hot during daytime in the desert so the cloud provided shelter and protection against the hostile and deadly heat.
When we follow the leading of the Lord we are assured of safety and protection even in the midst of hostility and danger. The Lord our Shepherd always leads us beside still waters- Psalms 23:2. This is a peaceful, restful life free from anxiety, apprehension, and troubledness.
At night it can be fiercely dark in the desert one can’t see beyond their nose. So, the Lord in a pillar of fire was Israel’s light and hence guide at night.
The night speaks of those moments when it seems like we are stuck, stranded, stagnant, confused, not knowing what’s next, what to do. We have assurance that though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death we fear no evil for the Lord is with us, Psalms 23:3, He’s leading us in the paths of Righteousness for His Name’s sake. Psalms 23:4.
Today the Lord is not leading us in a physical pillar of cloud or fire. His Holy Spirit is with us and dwells in us forever. John 14:16,17.
We are led by the Spirit as children of God. Romans8:14.
He leads us by that inward witness in our spirit or heart. Romans 8:16. It’s a knowing, an assurance, peace on the inside of our hearts where we know what to do.
Follow that prompting, that signal, that inward knowing deep down in your heart, yield to that inner peace in all your decision making.
