Your promise revives me; it comforts me in all my troubles. Psalms 119:50 (NLT)
The last part of Psalms 23:4 says Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Shepherds in ancient times carried a rod and a staff. The rod was to fight off predators that would attack the sheep. The staff was a longer stick with a hook and the shepherd would use it to rescue a sheep that had fallen and got stuck where the shepherd couldn’t reach with his hands. The rod and staff meant defense and rescue for the sheep. They were the sheep’s comfort. The promise of God which is His Word, is His rod and staff with which He defends and rescues us. It’s our comfort. The first part of Psalms 23:4 says – Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You [are] with meLet this promise, this affirmation revive and comfort you.
