That no one may become guilty of sexual vice, or become a profane (godless and sacrilegious) person as Esau did, who sold his own birthright for a single meal. Hebrews 12:16 (AMPC)
Esau was focused on a momentary need and went for a momentary means to meet it. He was hungry for a moment and went for a little morsel of food to satisfy himself for a moment. Because Esau despised his birthright he ended up selling it to get temporary relief. He exchanged the eternal for something fleeting. There’s a wise saying that don’t eat the egg and miss the chicken. While the egg is terribly tasty, readily available, and may seemingly meet the need of the moment, waiting, even though for a while longer for the egg to hatch into a chick that would grow into a chicken is far better and can even ensure you get more eggs as well as chicken to enjoy for a long time.
When we ignore and despise godly means and ways in preference for worldly and fleshly means and ways we are acting like Esau.
When we choose to meet our most often momentary or short term needs and desires using momentary or fleshly means we are selling our birthright. When bodily appetites and physical pleasure are more important to us than godliness, the sanctity of our bodies, and honoring God then we are not different from godless, profane, Esau.
Don’t let your feelings, hormones, fantasies, or urges drive you to find relief or release in way that looks insanely pleasurable, quick, easy, and harmless. It’s all for a moment and yet results in long term anguish, loss, and regret.
Sexual immorality has brought many pain, disease, and even death.
A glance, a text, a peck, a touch, a hug, a lift, a quickie, a one night stand outside of marriage have all been known to lead to untold suffering and loss.
In this context your birthright is your God ordained way and means of finding pleasure and fulfillment as a man and as a woman.
It is only truly found in marriage.
Keep yourself – mind and body whole and wholly for the one person you’re going to spend the rest of your life with in the exclusivity of holy matrimony. It’s your birthright don’t sell it.
