Be Discreet  Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Proverbs 2:11 (NIV)  The passage in Ephesians 5:15-18 explains and helps understand what discretion is.  Ephesians 5:15 (NLT) So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.  To be discreet is to be careful how we live. It is to act wisely. The opposite of discretion is acting carelessly and foolishly.  Ephesians 5:16(NLT) Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.  Discretion is studying and taking advantage of every moment and situation, acting in a way that something good comes out of it.  Ephesians 5:17 (NLT) Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.  Discretion is following your heart from where what God always wants you to do comes from. Ephesians 5:18 (NLT) Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,  Discretion is refusing to be under or be driven by the influence of anything else but the Spirit of God. Refuse to be driven by emotions, reasoning, circumstances, and be led by the Spirit. Avoid saying or doing anything out of excitement or incitement. Be discreet or careful how you talk, how you relate and deal with people, how you carry on your life responsibilities.

How God Gives Wisdom

For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth [come] knowledge and understanding Proverbs 2:6 (NKJV)  Are you in need of wisdom? We all are. James 1:5 says if you lack wisdom ask God who gives to all liberally without fault-finding and it will be given to you.  But what if you already asked and God gave you wisdom but you didn’t realize it so you’re still asking Him? How does God give wisdom? By speaking it. The Scripture has said God gives wisdom… from His mouth…  What God speaks is wisdom. For example, let’s say you’re in need of wisdom for dealing with life’s needs and demands. God has already spoken wisdom – Matthew 6:25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? In the verses that follow He basically says do not worry because it doesn’t solve anything. Understand that the God who takes care of all creation knows you, you’re more special to Him than birds and plants which He freely provides for. Engage your mind and energies with His ways and principles and all will turn out the best for you. When you embrace and act on these instructions then you have recognized, received and are walking in God’s wisdom. For every issue or problem God has given wisdom from His mouth by speaking. Find out what God has spoken about your case in the Scriptures. That’s the first place we get wisdom. 

The Commands of Life

1My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, Proverbs   5Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. 2:1,5 (NKJV)  The Word command also means an instruction that activates a device like a computer.  What God says to us, commands us to do, are the prompts or signals that activate and drive life. God’s commands are words of life.   The Scripture has said that receiving and treasuring God’s words or commands is how we find the knowledge of God. Real fulfilled life flows from the knowledge of God – John 17:3. The knowledge of God is the knowledge of (union with) life, peace, safety and wholeness.  Let your attitude about God’s commands or commandments change from seeing them as orders or rules to keep from a distant impersonal deity and see them as signals that activate and drive life.  The things He tells us to do, say or think, are the things by which life runs right. The things He tells us not to do, say, think or walk, are the ones that ruin life.  

Listen for Safety and Security

But if you listen to me, you will be safe and secure without fear of disaster.” Proverbs 1:33 (CEV)  Listening is more than casual hearing. It’s taking hold of and hanging on what you’re hearing like a person holds on a rope given to them to rescue them. In Acts 27:9-11 Paul warned the leaders of his sailing team that their voyage would end with disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also their lives. They heard but did not listen because they went on ahead to sail. What Paul had foretold happened and he told them they should have listened to him  Acts 27:21…”Men, you should have listened to me, and not have sailed from Crete and incurred this disaster and loss.  Don’t be a casual hearer, consider what you’re hearing and act accordingly and immediately. A thought or knowing or voice, comes to you like – “check to see and make sure, put that object out of the way, don’t say that, wait, slow down, do this now, that’s enough, hurry up…”. Many disasters and losses have happened because of not listening to that still small easily ignorable voice and so many disasters and losses have been prevented because of listening to it.

Avoid Violence 

Robbery always claims the life of the robber — this is what happens to anyone who lives by violence. Proverbs 1:19 (GNT)  It’s not only robbery and murder that are the only forms of violence but every time we take matters into our hands that’s violence because we end up hurting and harming others as well as ourselves.  Every time we choose to do things our own way instead of trusting God’s way that’s violence. When Adam chose his way against God’s way he introduced violence into the world.  When you choose to hit back, refuse to forgive, insist on your own way, that’s violence. When you choose violence, it claims you. It takes over your mind, attitude, actions and life. This is what Jesus meant when He told Peter that all who use the sword die by the sword – Matthew 26:52.  Avoid being harsh and rude to others even those contrary to you, even those who have wronged you. That’s violence. Choose and submit to God’s way. Trust him. Don’t get even, where you’re wronged let God vindicate you. That’s how you avoid violence. That’s how Jesus triumphed over violence.

Crowned with Grace and Honor

My son, give ear to the training of your father, and do not give up the teaching of your mother: For they will be a crown of grace for your head, and chain-ornaments about your neck. Proverbs 1:8-9 (BBE)  The training of the father and the teaching of the mother refer to instructions of life based on and rooted in God’s ways or Word. God is a God of Grace and honor. When we live and walk according to His Word we live and walk in Grace and honor. The Word of God is called the Word of His Grace – Acts 20:32. Where Grace is, struggling and frustration ceases, giving way to rest, effectiveness, and fruitfulness.  God has magnified or honored His Word above all – Psalms 138:2. When we give ear to and conduct our affairs according to the Word, we are held up high in the place of honor above all situations.

The Beginning of Knowledge

The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge, [But] fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7 (NKJV)  The fear of the Lord is to honor and obey Him. It is also to agree with and yield to Him.  When we are in agreement with the Lord we will think as He thinks, see as He sees, talk as He talks, act as He acts.  This is the knowledge that makes life possible and easy. Jesus says “come, learn from me, my yoke is easy and my burden light” – Matthew 11:28-30. His yoke and burden refer to the knowledge we learn from Him and act upon. To walk in this knowledge is to follow instructions that cause one to overcome and turn out successful in life. This knowledge starts with getting acquainted with the Lord, having a close intimate relationship and fellowship with Him, where you become one with Him in thought, intent and purpose.

The Wise Pay Attention 

A wise [man] will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel, Proverbs 1:5 (NKJV)  We are the generation with the highest proliferation, fastest flow of, and easiest access to information but unfortunately, we are the most uninformed, we are almost entirely dependent on others and gadgets to remember, process, and gainfully use and apply simple basic information.  This is because we have left the basic wisdom of paying attention to what we hear, or see.  Do you take time to really hear what you’re hearing, see what you’re seeing? Or are you just scrolling or flipping the pages and channels of life?  Years ago, people could save and recall quite a significant list of phone numbers in their heads.  Today most of us the only phone number we know by head is our own. A few know the ones of their spouses from head.   Faith comes by hearing and hearing…Romans 10:17. Wisdom comes the same way. That’s not hearing so many things all at once but one thing at a time. It’s paying attention to the one important thing now until you fully know and understand what’s in it to the point you can apply it profitably in life. To hear is to pay attention, it is to increase learning and it is to be wise.
