God’s Wisdom offers Everything 

13Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, 16Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Proverbs 3:13,16 (NIV)  The wisdom of the world cannot offer you everything. In the world’s way of succeeding, you may get rich and famous but most of the time at the expense of your life, health, and relationships. Success and riches gained without God come with fear and worry. You fear and worry that you may lose it, that it may be stolen. Now you become restless. You work harder to maintain and safeguard your possessions. So, you have no time to take care of your health, no time for your loved ones, no time to enjoy life itself. Then you lose it all before it is actually lost because it has become meaningless. But the wisdom of God offers it all – long, healthy, stable life, riches and honor. The wisdom of God is the holistic blessing which makes rich and there’s no sorrow with it. You’re blessed in your mind with peace, in your body with health and longevity, loving relationships, financial and material prosperity, because it’s God who guides and empowers you.

The Lord’s Discipline

 11My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you. 12For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights. Proverbs 3:11-12 (NLT)   Some Christians think the Lord’s discipline, chastening, training, or correction means hardships, trouble, and even tragedy including sickness, accidents and death. But that’s a fallen nature mindset and it’s not true of God’s character. All the hardships, pain, and suffering in the world are the result of the fall of man and not in any way connected to God’s ways. God disciplines us with His Word and Holy Spirit. They are our God given and ordained teachers and trainers. Responding positively to what God tells us even in the midst of fiery trials is the discipline of the Lord in action. When we read the account of Joseph the son of Jacob, we only focus on what he suffered but Scripture points out and emphasizes that the Word tested him or proved him true – Psalms 105:19. The things Joseph suffered from people wasn’t the real discipline of the Lord. The Word God had given him through dreams and his holding onto it was the discipline of the Lord. What he went through was the work of men – Psalms 105:18, but it served as the ground where the Lord disciplined and trained him with His Word. If trouble or trials were the discipline then everyone who suffers would be disciplined, but it’s not like that. It’s the Word and Holy Spirit who teach, remind, encourage, warn, and strengthen us. It’s the Word and Holy Spirit who even in the midst of suffering and pain discipline us to be patient, confident, kind, faithful, godly, honest, forgiving, understanding and loving.

Health and Strength 

Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones. Proverbs 3:7-8 (NKJV)  Being wise in your own eyes means having more confidence in what your reasoning and feelings say than what God says. Evil is not only the obvious like murder, adultery, robbery but every way of thinking and acting that contradicts what God says. When Jesus told a man that his sins are forgiven, some people questioned it in their minds and Jesus called that evil thinking – Matthew 9:2-4. Most of the time our senses contradict what God says and that’s evil – Romans 8:7  Departing from evil is choosing to put what God says above what we think or feel. This is life – Romans 8:6. This is what brings health to our flesh and strength to our bones. For example, when God says with long life He satisfies you – Psalms 91:16, choose that above what nature and science say that your life expectancy is already determined by certain physical, geographical, and social aspects. When human experience says that the older you grow the lesser your strength, reject it by choosing what God says that as your days so shall your strength be – Deuteronomy 33:25.

Honor the Lord with all Your Possessions

9Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; 10then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. Proverbs 3:9-10 (NIV)  Honoring the Lord is not only by mouth saying and singing Lord, I honor you. True honor comes from the heart.  Where your treasure is there your heart also is – Matthew 6:21, there your attention and energies are. When we submit our possessions and wealth to the Lord we are showing He is our treasure:  First, we are declaring that He is the owner of all things; secondly, He is our source, all we have comes from Him; thirdly we are saying all things are for serving Him; and fourth we are saying that true enjoyment and satisfaction is in and with the Lord. This is the place of fullness and overflow in every area of life.

The Lord is Trustworthy 

5Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV)  Trust is learned by the one trusting and must be earned by the one being trusted. We learn to trust people and things we’ve found out can be trusted and all because these people or things have proven trustworthy.  We can trust in God because He already has a proven track record of absolute reliability.  God can not lie, and He has given us His Word assuring us that He’s able to carry us. God has always fulfilled what He promised – Joshua 23:14…You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the LORD your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed.  We can trust God because we have many witnesses of men and women who trusted God and He proved Himself dependable – Psalms 22:4-5 Our fathers trusted in You; They trusted, and You delivered them. They cried to You, and were delivered; They trusted in You, and were not ashamed.  Learn to trust in the Lord as you feed on his faithfulness. Psalms 37:3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Feeding on the Lord’s faithfulness means seeing in His Word the many times He’s been faithful and also remembering the many times He’s been faithful in helping and carrying you.

Wisdom Prolongs Life 

1My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, 2for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. Proverbs 3:1-2 (NIV)  When a person dies even when they are still young people say that’s the time God determined for them but that’s not true. God’s determined time for all of us is long life – Psalms 91:16. Yes Scripture talks of all the days ordained for us already written in God’s book before one of them came to be – Psalms 139:16. But this doesn’t mean God determined it alone and we have no say in it. Our theme Scripture has showed us that when we do not forget the teaching of the Lord and keep His commands it will prolong our life many years. King Hezekiah had his life prolonged by fifteen years when he prayed to God who had earlier told him to prepare to die – Isaiah 38:1-5. In prayer he was submitting to and applying the Lord’s teaching and command for he reminded the Lord of how he had walked in His ways. Living according to the teaching in the Word of God results in long life for us.

The Way of Goodness

So you may walk in the way of goodness, And keep [to] the paths of righteousness. Proverbs 2:20 (NKJV)  In the book of Proverbs wisdom is referred to with a feminine pronoun. For example, Proverbs 1:20-21 Wisdom shouts in the streets. She cries out in the public square. She calls to the crowds along the main street, to those gathered in front of the city gate  Like a woman is a companion and helper to the man, wisdom is our God assigned life companion and helper.  Wisdom delivers us from another dangerous woman called the immoral seductress (Proverbs 2:16-19) who represents the way of living that appears attractive but leads to destruction. This woman or way of living forsakes the covenant of God (Proverbs 2:17) which means rejecting relationship and fellowship with God. This leads to death (Proverbs 2:18). But wisdom rescues and keeps us from that woman or way and sets and keeps us in the way of goodness and the path of righteousness. Choose and treat wisdom as your lifetime companion and helper so you may live and walk in the way of goodness which is abundant life, perfect peace, fullness of joy, true rest and lasting fulfillment.

Be Discreet  Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Proverbs 2:11 (NIV)  The passage in Ephesians 5:15-18 explains and helps understand what discretion is.  Ephesians 5:15 (NLT) So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.  To be discreet is to be careful how we live. It is to act wisely. The opposite of discretion is acting carelessly and foolishly.  Ephesians 5:16(NLT) Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.  Discretion is studying and taking advantage of every moment and situation, acting in a way that something good comes out of it.  Ephesians 5:17 (NLT) Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.  Discretion is following your heart from where what God always wants you to do comes from. Ephesians 5:18 (NLT) Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,  Discretion is refusing to be under or be driven by the influence of anything else but the Spirit of God. Refuse to be driven by emotions, reasoning, circumstances, and be led by the Spirit. Avoid saying or doing anything out of excitement or incitement. Be discreet or careful how you talk, how you relate and deal with people, how you carry on your life responsibilities.

How God Gives Wisdom

For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth [come] knowledge and understanding Proverbs 2:6 (NKJV)  Are you in need of wisdom? We all are. James 1:5 says if you lack wisdom ask God who gives to all liberally without fault-finding and it will be given to you.  But what if you already asked and God gave you wisdom but you didn’t realize it so you’re still asking Him? How does God give wisdom? By speaking it. The Scripture has said God gives wisdom… from His mouth…  What God speaks is wisdom. For example, let’s say you’re in need of wisdom for dealing with life’s needs and demands. God has already spoken wisdom – Matthew 6:25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? In the verses that follow He basically says do not worry because it doesn’t solve anything. Understand that the God who takes care of all creation knows you, you’re more special to Him than birds and plants which He freely provides for. Engage your mind and energies with His ways and principles and all will turn out the best for you. When you embrace and act on these instructions then you have recognized, received and are walking in God’s wisdom. For every issue or problem God has given wisdom from His mouth by speaking. Find out what God has spoken about your case in the Scriptures. That’s the first place we get wisdom. 

The Commands of Life

1My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, Proverbs   5Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. 2:1,5 (NKJV)  The Word command also means an instruction that activates a device like a computer.  What God says to us, commands us to do, are the prompts or signals that activate and drive life. God’s commands are words of life.   The Scripture has said that receiving and treasuring God’s words or commands is how we find the knowledge of God. Real fulfilled life flows from the knowledge of God – John 17:3. The knowledge of God is the knowledge of (union with) life, peace, safety and wholeness.  Let your attitude about God’s commands or commandments change from seeing them as orders or rules to keep from a distant impersonal deity and see them as signals that activate and drive life.  The things He tells us to do, say or think, are the things by which life runs right. The things He tells us not to do, say, think or walk, are the ones that ruin life.
