Let the Word Lead You

My son, keep your father’s command, And do not forsake the law of your mother. Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck. When you roam, they will lead you Proverbs 6:20-22(NKJV) The Father’s command and the mother’s law mean the Word of God. We are to be governed and directed by the Word of God for it is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path – Psalms 119:105. Binding the Word upon our heart and tying it around our neck implies continually looking into the Word so that we are one with it. This is when the Word starts to lead us. It shapes our thinking, influences our actions and forms our character.

Shun Idleness and Laziness

Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. Proverbs 6:6-8 (NLT) The ants are diligent and industrious. Learning from their lifestyle makes one wise. They do the right thing at the right time preparing for seasons to come. Never allow idleness or laziness in your life. Don’t let your mind be idle or lazy but let it be active, thinking on what builds, strengthens and brings progress. Don’t let your mouth be idle or lazy; let it speak life, healing, and prosperity. Don’t let your hands be idle or lazy, let them work diligently at talent, gifting, or trade. Like the ant don’t wait until there’s need. Exercise yourself in something profitable now, prepare for seasons to come. This is wisdom – doing the right thing at the right time.

Avoid Unnecessary Burdens

My child, suppose you agree to pay the debt of someone, who cannot repay a loan. Then you are trapped by your own words, Proverbs 6:1-2(CEV) Assuming responsibility for another’s actions is taking their place. It’s getting trapped by yourself. You’re not just helping secure a loan for another but you’re also agreeing that you’re going to pay back that loan in case they default or fail. Therefore, simple and plain wisdom is whether it’s for a relative, or friend, only guarantee a loan if you’re willing and are able to pay back in case they default or fail. Now Scripture tells us to help carry each other’s burdens – Galatians 6:2 The wisest thing to do for someone who seeks financial help is to contribute what you’re able to give and readily have.

Passion and pleasure God’s way

Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth. She is a loving deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts satisfy you always. May you always be captivated by her love. Proverbs 5:18-19(NLT) Passion and pleasure in and of themselves are wonderful because they come from God. We can revel in reckless passion and pleasure when we choose to engage in them according to God’s way which is in the established and secure borders of marriage – Proverbs 5:15 (NLT)Drink water from your own well— share your love only with your wife. God is the most passionate about us and takes the most pleasure in us. He has given us marriage so we may share in His utmost passion and pleasure. God is faithful to us and in that we find safety and fulfillment. Likewise, marriage which is the most intimate human relationship is meant to mirror the same. The way God focuses His love, care, desire and tenderness on His people is the same way a husband and wife are to focus exclusively on each other. The key is how you see each other. The Scripture has talked about “loving doe, graceful deer, satisfying breasts” this is all about visuals. See your spouse as a blessing from the Lord, a fountain of life and joy. Don’t look for what’s faulty or missing. Look intently and notice the good, the advantages, the strengths in each other. The Scripture has said ” the wife of your youth” Youth speaks of raw intensity where even the little insignificant things excite you and bring you pleasure. Cultivate that mindset where what seems ordinary and insignificant is a wonder all because you’re with the most important, precious and amazing person in the whole wide world.

Sweet but Sour

The words of an immoral woman may be as sweet as honey and as smooth as olive oil. But all that you really get from being with her is bitter poison and pain. Proverbs 5:3-4 (CEV) The serpent in the garden convinced Eve with sweet and smooth words, she saw the fruit of the forbidden tree as good, pleasant, and desirable – Genesis 3, but eating it brought sorrow and death in the world. This is what adultery looks like. It’s bitter poison and pain. Adultery leads to death – Proverbs 5:5; You lose your honor and all you have achieved -Proverbs 5:9; Strangers consume your wealth and enjoy the fruit of your labor – Proverbs 5:10; Your body is consumed with disease Proverbs 5:11; Your life is ruined and you end up with disgrace and regret – Proverbs 5:12-14. Jesus said adultery starts in the heart – Matthew 5:28, it starts as a thought – Proverbs 23:7. Therefore guard against adultery by guarding against thoughts that suggest immorality. Don’t let your mind and eyes be idle or wander. Keep away from every form of pornography. Don’t just avoid but flee, run for your life, from situations that cause temptation to adultery – 1Corinthians 6:18. One most effective way of fleeing sexual immorality is by aggressively occupying yourself with righteousness, faith, love, and peace – 2Timothy 2:22.

Yield to Wisdom

My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen carefully to my wise counsel. Then you will show discernment, and your lips will express what you’ve learned. Proverbs 5:1-2 (NLT) The number one way we acquire wisdom is through listening. The Scripture has admonished us to pay attention to God’s wisdom by listening carefully to His wise counsel. The Word of God is His counsel. We yield to God’s wisdom by paying attention to His Word, listening to it, obeying it. The number one way we act in wisdom is through speaking. The last part of our text Scripture says “Then you will show discernment, and your lips will express what you’ve learned” You can activate and release wisdom in what you say. When we yield our lips to God’s Word, say God’s Word or speak in line with it, we are speaking the Wisdom of God, we are yielding to God’s wisdom. Yield to God’s wisdom as you hear His Word and as you speak it.

Fix Your Eyes on what’s Ahead

Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Proverbs 4:25 (NLT) What’s ahead of us isn’t something in the distant future but something right before us. Fixing our eyes on what’s ahead is focusing on what God has prepared, done, accomplished and made ready for and given us. 1 Corinthians 2:12 (NKJV) Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. What’s ahead of us is the life of victory and dominion that Jesus made available to us in His death and Resurrection. What’s behind us is the fall of Adam and all its consequences of condemnation, bondage and oppression. We fix our eyes ahead by looking to Jesus and His finished work on the Cross. Hebrews 12:2a (GNT) Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from beginning to end. We see Jesus as our life, our worthiness, our qualification, our wisdom, our advantage in life, our security. We see ourselves in Him as able, successful. This is the best way to look ahead.

Keep your mouth free from corrupt talk

Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Proverbs 4:24 (NIV) According to God’s Word perverse or corrupt talk is more than abusive or obscene language. The Hebrew words from which we get perverse and corrupt actually mean distortion, crookedness, false or deviation. They give the idea of turning aside. Perversity and corrupt talk mean speaking what’s contrary to what God says. It’s what the devil spoke to Adam and Eve. It was distorted, crooked, and false. What he spoke to them caused them to turn aside from what God had told them. It brought the distortion and crookedness that’s in the world which is sin, fear, confusion, worry, shame, condemnation, sickness, poverty, suffering, destruction and death. It’s a turning aside from what God says and gives which is Righteousness, life, peace, assurance, glory health, comfort, abundance, security and immortality. When God says you’re His beloved child, He loves and cares for you, but you say you’re a nobody, unlovely, unworthy, no one loves or cares for you that’s perversity and corrupt talk. When God says you’re righteous, blessed, and favored through His Son Jesus Christ and what He did on the Cross but you say you’re still a sinner because you still fall into sin, you’re under a curse and rejected because things are not working out, that’s perversity and corrupt talk. Let your mouth be filled with God talk.

Guard Your Heart

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23 (NIV) Here we see how the Wisdom of God far surpasses the wisdom of men. People spend all their time, money, and energy guarding their life, possessions and achievements but still fail. On the other hand, God says you guard only one thing, one area, and everything else will be taken care of. God says guard the source, and the outflowing will be secure. The heart is where life flows from and it’s where it’s sustained from. Everything physical, seen, and tangible is birthed from the unseen, which is the thoughts, ideas, beliefs and convictions in your heart. When your heart is filled with life, peace, assurance, safety, contentment, rest, and certainty that’s what is going to flow out of you, that’s what will mark everything you touch, do, and have. But if your heart is filled with fear, worry, confusion, failure, insecurity, and lack that’s what will come out of you, that’s what will mark whatever you touch, do, and have. Therefore, focus on your heart and the rest will fall in line. That’s why Holy Spirit led prayer is that the eyes of our hearts are enlightened that we may know…what God has called us to, given us and is doing in us – Ephesians 1:18,19; that Christ dwell in our hearts through faith – Ephesians 3:17. This doesn’t mean Christ is not in us so we call Him to come in, it means we fill our hearts with the knowledge that Christ is in us.

Keys to Life and Health

20My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. 21Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; 22for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body. Proverbs 4:20-22(NIV) The saying that out of sight out of mind has a point. We can even say out of sight, out of mind, out of body. But let’s look at it another way – In sight, in mind, in body. What’s in sight, stays in your mind, heart, and body. You can have and enjoy life and health by simply effortlessly seeing them constantly. The Scripture has said that when we do not let the Word of God out of our sight but keep seeing it, guarding it in our hearts, we find it and then it’s life and health to us. The Word of God is life – John 6:63 (NKJV), and it’s living – Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV). The Word of God is also health – Proverbs 4:22. When you keep looking into the Word you see life and health. You see the God who desires you living healthy and prosperous. This gets rid of the mindset of degeneration and death that’s in the world. You begin to agree with God and see yourself living and healthy. This is how we find the Word. Then the Word you’ve given access and authority into your life starts transforming your body from within to line up with the truth of God which is life and health. This is the faith life. This is seeing the things that are not seen. This is seeing yourself in God’s Word which is living and health. This is how you can see yourself to life and health.
