After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep [Gate] a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. John 5:1-3 (NKJV)
Sometimes hanging too long around those who are going through what you’re going through or something similar works against any possible solution. For one you tend to get into sympathizing with each other in that condition and get conditioned to it.
Then you settle in and take a troublesome situation to be normal because everyone around you is like that.
Moreover you compare yourself with those in the same boat and get satisfied with the fact that your situation isn’t as bad as that of your neighbors.
Whatever issues you’re dealing with the best company are those who have gone through it and overcome. That doesn’t mean they aren’t going through anything even at the moment because at every point in life everyone is always facing some obstacle. But they have a practice of not settling in but pressing through difficulties and overcoming.
