Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men. Acts 17:11-12 (NIV).
The Word of God was given and written for us so that believing we may have life, the God kind of life which is life to the full. John 20:31. It is the Word that saves us. James 1:21.
The Word builds us up and gives us our inheritance. Acts 20:32.
Everything God does for and in us is through His Word. So, it is in the best of our interest to get acquainted with God’s Word. To get the most out of the Word requires us to dig deep into it, to immerse ourselves wholly into it. This is being a student of the Word, a call and quest to study the Word.
In our theme scripture above the Berean Jews are said to be of noble character meaning high, excellent, honorable qualities. This is because they were students of the Word. When they heard what was preached, taught they got into the scriptures and examined them to see if was true. John 8:32 Jesus says that we shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. It is the knowledge of the truth that sets us free. The Word of God is truth. John 17:17. As we study the Word, we are engaging the truth and embracing our freedom.
Studying the Word gets us nourished on the truths of the Faith and our Christian instruction 1Timothy4:6 As we study the Word, our profiting and progress becomes visible and plain to everyone. 1Timothy4:15 It is the student of the Word who is able to teach others thus both saving himself and his hearers 1Timothy 4:16
